The Alcatel One Touch Blaze 990

Our friends at Alcatel One Touch Philippines have nicely lent us one of their Android smartphones available locally. They sent the Blaze 990 (OT-990), which is a pretty nice looking Android 2.2 budget android with some nice physical and software touches. Priced at PHP 9,999 as a promo, it looks and feels a little more luxurious than the usual Androids for this price range. But we’ll save our final conclusions when we put up our review once we get to know the phone a bit more. For now, here’s our hardware tour video and some shots of the phone for your perusal.

We’re kind of getting fond of the phone so far. The large 3.5” screen, the shiny strip around the device, and to some extent the printed back with curves and accents makes it look a lot more mid-range than a budget smartphone – or at least it makes the phone a looker for this range. One thing that you won’t notice with the video is that the speaker on the back is actually pretty loud. It is currently one of the louder smartphones we’ve tried so far and the audio quality is deep and bassy – even compared to flagships from other manufacturers. It seems like Alcatel might have come up with a nice disrupter for the budget smartphone market with some quirky features that differentiate it from the crowd. Do they have a winning smartphone with the Blaze 990? Watch out for the full review to find out!

Hi Biggs, I’m told it might stay at the PHP 9,999 price for the time being so I’m about to review it as a 10k phone. The inclination is that it won’t go back up to a higher price so its pretty much PHP 9,999 SRP now.

Hope it stays that way! =)

I’m waiting for the full review too! Can you tell us the front camera’s video resolution? I’ve seen your videos on YouTube and it’s really a pity that this phone has such a poor main camera.

Hi Dani, the front camera video resolution is CIF (352×288) 30fps, which is the same for the video on the main camera. This is roughly around half VGA resolution (640×480) to give you a comparison.

For pictures, the main camera is 5MP and the front camera is VGA (640×480 images).

We’ll hopefully have some more articles about it soon, so check back in a couple days!

How much is the memory of this device? 200MB internal memory or RAM (Comparing with LG P500’s 512MB RAM)?

Hi Borgy, not sure about the full specs because online references are incomplete. It seems to have the 200+MB for app memory, and was not able to check the RAM. System RAM didn’t seem to affect use at least. The app memory is slightly below what we would want to have, but is still comfortable enough to install our usual apps. SD installing is enabled so that generally helps keep most of the memory free.

The Optimus One is rated at 170MB available for apps, so that’s actually 30MB lower than the Alcatel.

      Hope that helps!
