Prey tracks your umm… prey – or laptop and cellphone thieves.
Previously, we told you what you should do when your phone gets stolen. Besides giving that a good read again and doing those steps, there are now a few new trackers or finders that you can use to regain your device. One of the more interesting ones is Prey from Fork Ltd. – a laptop and smartphone tracker which you can install right now for free.
The software is currently available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Ubuntu computers and Android smartphones – and can be triggered from their site or via a text message to your number. Once active, Prey will automatically connect to WiFi signals that it can find and can report the GPS location (or WiFi location), take a screenshot of the desktop, take a picture of the thief, lock your data, or even lock the device entirely. Here’s a video:

Sadly there is still no iPhone or iPad version out, but we hope that’s coming. We currently have this on our HTC Desire Android phone and like we usually say for tracking software – its absolutely essential to install them but we hope we never have to use them.
If you have an Android or a Laptop, at least put this in for some peace of mind.
