New, phone. Somewhat of an innovation. I’m not really that excited. Vivo, longtime launcher of selfie phones that flood the marketplace every 2 seconds with a new version has come out with a new one, to the surprise of absolutely no one. Ok, fine the new V11 is actually a bit innovative with an on-display fingerprint scanner like the Vivo X21. Innovative yes. Important enough to buy a completely new phone? Absolutely not. If you can’t tell, I’m not exactly thrilled about this new phone but the spec sheet definitely isn’t bad even by Vivo’s standards. PHP 20k (US$400) gets you a Snapdragon 660, 6GB RAM and the in display fingerprint scanner. That innovative feature is probably worth the price of admission alone, but if your current phone still shoots good photos, is a Snapdragon 625 or higher, then you likely don’t need to upgrade.

Vivo V11 – PHP 19,999

  • Snapdragon 660 Processor
  • 6.41″ 2340×1080 Super AMOLED Display
  • 6GB RAM, 64GB ROM, MicroSD
  • Android 8.1 Oreo (Funtouch UI)
  • 12+5MP Rear Camera
    • 25MP Front Camera
  • Dual SIM LTE
  • In-Display Fingerprint Scanner
  • Face Unlock
  • 3,400mAh Battery w/ Fast Charging

Specs are ok for the price, honestly. It ain’t no Pocophone or Honor Play but with the overpadded selfie megapixels and in-display scanner, you can argue that it’s worth the extra several thousand bucks with lower processor specs. MAYBE. It all lies on what your priorities are. If you wanna look hip and banging with your girlfriends taking selfies while shopping, then this is more up your alley. If you prefer a more stock experience with no lag and better processing performance for something like gaming, well this ISN’T your thing.

There’s also a Vivo V11i, which removes the in-display scanner for people who just wanna selfie but don’t wanna show off their fancy new scanner to their friends.

Vivo V11i – PHP 15,999

  • MediaTek Helio P60 Processor
  • 6.3″ 2280×1080 LTPS Display
  • 4GB RAM, 128GB ROM, MicroSD
  • Android 8.1 Oreo (Funtouch UI)
  • 16+5MP Rear Cameras
    • 25MP Front Camera
  • Dual SIM LTE
  • Rear Fingerprint Scanner
  • 3,315mAh Battery w/ Fast Charging

For not significantly less you get a lot less for the V11i. If you’re going for this, why just not pay up and get the better model? Well, sometimes people just make do but at this point making do might as well just be a Pocophone instead of this. One thing you can say positive about this V11i though is that IT IS cheaper than an Oppo F9 with the same processor.

What I haven’t mentioned yet is the new display, which is actually somewhat of an upgrade – its nearly bezelless with a very minimal notch. They call it some fullview halo whatever thing. I call it a full display with a pimple. It looks good for the most part so its not really a big deal and theoretically more screen is better especially in the looks department.

But I don’t like black borders or a black spot in my display when playing games or watching movies. I don’t like having apps that don’t work properly on my notch. I don’t like notifications spilling over into my main screen because it can’t display on the notch. The modern 2018 notched phone still hasn’t fixed all these issues and for those reasons I still prefer my old 16:9 ratio display that always works and never puts bars on my content or adds a pimple.

But maybe dealing with black bars is fine with you. Maybe you just like the look of a cool, all display phone. I won’t judge. If you like it, then these phones aren’t too bad honestly. I bet the build quality is pretty good. Photo quality is overmarketed by the brand but probably not terrible enough that I wouldn’t recommend it. So knock yourself out.

Me, I still have a 2016 phone with better specs that I bought for a lower price that shoots better video in 4K with stabilization and doesn’t have black bars on its higher res QHD display. But that’s just me.

Seriously though if you just wanted bang for buck go for the Pocophone F1. These two phones are for those special snowflakes who think you can actually tell the difference between 12MP and 25MP selfies.

If you wanna grab the V11, it’ll be available for pre-order now at Lazada, Shopee, and Argomall. There’s freebies so if you’re really intent on buying one, might as well be now.
