With over 17 years’ time to improve upon the original, you can be sure that Canon put everything they had into creating the newly announced EF 35mm f/1.4 L II USM. Replacing the extremely popular EF 35mm f/1.4 L before it, the new lens brings the highly regarded prime into the 21st century with improvements all around. The lens is the first to use Blue Spectrum Refractive optics (BR Optics) technology, an optical element capable of sharper details by reducing chromatic aberrations and color fringing. Featuring a redesigned optical package that includes 14 elements in 11 groups with two aspherical elements and one Ultra-low Dispersion element, the new lens is capable of a shorter 0.28m minimum focus distance and smoother bokeh with its 9 aperture blades. Finally, the L II is fully weather sealed, including a gasket on the lens mount and a 72mm filter thread for extra protection. With an SRP of PHP 86,998 it may be pricey for the average consumer, but you can be sure that it’ll be any Canon shooter’s best friend for the next decade or so like the first version before it.
