The RiM BlackBerry PlayBook
Research in Motion’s tablet offering – the BlackBerry PlayBook – is about to be in local users’ hands come this August. The QNX-software based 7” tablet is going to be widely available in the Philippines on August 6th, while Globe is also offering the devices with a 3-day advantage preorder (Aug 3) that comes with some of their postpaid plan tiers and includes a traditional BlackBerry phone to tether on. For those interested, details including specs and pricing will be after the jump.
The BlackBerry PlayBook is a RiM’s first tablet running RiM’s recently acquired mobile OS called QNX. It has a 7” 1024×600 resolution screen, dual-core 1Ghz processor, and 5MP camera (no flash) with 3MP front facing capable of 1080p recoding on both. You also get the usual Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS connectivity options as well. What it does not have though is a SIM slot because for now all versions of the PlayBook are all WiFi only. These are actually designed to tether to a BlackBerry phone for some added BlackBerry service mobile functionalities. Also, since its running on a new OS under the BlackBerry App store, not all apps are available for the tablet. But hopefully when the aforementioned upcoming Android run-time environment for the PlayBook arrives, you’ll be able to run a lot more apps from the droid marketplace on the device. You can also run Flash pages on the web browser as its one of the more touted features of the device.
To check out Globe’s Preorder plans for the BlackBerry PlayBook, you can go to their website here. We’d like you to note though, that since that site came up a few days ago, the “Only 100 Units Left” number hasn’t changed at all. Either they actually have more than 100 right now, or nobody has preordered it in the last couple days. We like to think it is the former. If not, they’re probably more interested in getting the tablet at a retail price. And those SRPs would be:
PHP 23,990 for 16GB version PHP 28,990 for 32GB version PHP 33,990 for 64GB version
If you’re keen, you can pick these up from BlackBerry retailers in two weeks. And you can check out a (not-so-informative) ad below if you’re into 30 second TVCs.
P.S.: If you came here looking for Barney Stinson’s Playbook, that would be here.
