While we’re not exactly big fans of Maria Sharapova, we understand she’s a popular tennis player that’s also quite a very attractive female – a feature that seems to have been documented in more than just a few men’s magazines over time. Unfortunately for this new Xperia Active YouTube ad that she stars in, it doesn’t do her much of a favor in looking like everybody seems to be used to. In fact, she does look a bit more like our beloved granny than anything else. You know, if our granny’s were like old blonde tennis stars.

Before we get to the video in question, some of you might be interested in the new phone she’s talking about. It’s a new Xperia Android device called the Xperia Active. And true to the name and supposedly its main brand ambassador, its marketed as a tough, rugged, Xperia phone. The phone has a 3” 480×320 display, 1Ghz Processor, 5MP Camera with LED, 720p video, front facing camera, and runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Those are ok specs, but the phone’s marquee feature is that it is dustproof and water resistant up to 1m of water for 30 minutes. While you won’t exactly be swimming with this phone, there’s enough liquid prooferage there to swim with your tank of fishes and survive. (Unlike a Galaxy S II ad that did the same, which we think is kind of ill advised.) The box supposedly comes with a bunch of other little accessories not usually found in smartphone boxes, including a wrist strap, arm band for workout use, and a headset with detachable ear hooks for sporty listening. Lastly, the box also includes one extra exchangeable back cover – because people still want to exchange the backs of their phones with other colors, right?

Anyway, we’re not trying to knock much of the phone. It seems pretty decent. We’d kind of like it to have had a higher resolution screen though, but I don’t think Maria minds that. What she should be mindful of though, is possibly her makeup, wardrobe and hairstylist choice for the Xperia Active video she stars in. What would normally be a gorgeous lady talking about a sporty phone, looks like a granny talking about something that looks like she doesn’t do: be active. We know that’s far from the truth, but watch the video and see for yourself.

Oh man, even the video preview is of her with the combed back hair and wrinkled face.

But we digress here. The Xperia Active seems like a decent active phone with definitely more in the box for sports use than the usual. We’d love if it were shockproof too, but sadly it doesn’t seem to be. Either way, the phone comes out in Q3 2011 in selected markets.

Editor’s Note: If you want to wash your eyes with a better Sony + Sharapova video, here’s one. (Notice they’re using a Mac instead of a Vaio though.)
