MediaTek has been on a roll with it garnering huge market share from Qualcomm thanks to the popularity of the Dimensity chips. Just after three years, the Dimensity series of chips has successfully flooded the market with an array of devices featuring it from Xiaomi, realme, Motorola, OnePlus and other phonemakers. Now, the MediaTek Dimensity 1080 chip has been made official.
First, Digital Chat Station has stated the presence of the new Dimensity 1080 SoC a while back. According to him, the chip is on the ball park of the Snapdragon 778G series in terms of performance. That would place it around the Snapdragon 855/860 level in terms of benchmarks from AnTuTu.
As for the chip itself, the 1080 will be having a dual cluster CPU design made up of two ARM Cortex A78 at 2.6GHz and six ARM Cortex A55 at 2GHz. The SoC is having a Mali G68 MC4 GPU and is fabbed with TSMC’s 6nm FinFET process. Features include support for 200MP sensors, 120Hz Full HD displays, 4K HDR video recording, WiFi 6, Dual 5G and LPDDR5 memory support.
As a rumor while back, Digital Chat Station stated that the chip will be a cheaper equivalent to the Snapdragon 778G while offering similar performance. It can be a benefit to phonemakers as the extra budget for the R&D of the device can be alotted to other areas as well.
Official availability of the chip will be this Q4 2022.
