Shopee Is ADDING “OPTIONAL” INSURANCE COST To Your Purchases WITHOUT ASKING!

Talk about a scumbag move. Shopee is adding additional cost to your electronics purchases WITHOUT ASKING. The purpose is clearly to get more money out of unattentive consumers who are speeding through the checkout process. How? Remember when you add a Shopee item to your cart, pick your vouchers and see the total price? That price you assume is fine and the next page just checks your location and payment method. But Shopee has sneakily added the “Electronics Protection” guarantee on the checkout page and HAS ENABLED IT BY DEFAULT, so consumers who are used to going straight to checkout payment will UNWITTINGLY PAY FOR AN EXTRA INSURANCE COST without them even noticing it.

The option for Insurance is fine, but it SHOULD BE OFF BY DEFAULT as most consumers will not even notice such a scumbag addition late in their checkout process.

We recently purchased a Roku LE product from a store in Shopee and went through the checkout process, but was surprised that WE PAID PHP75 EXTRA because Shopee made that decision for us. What a scumbag move. Imagine how many people checkout through Shopee everyday and don’t even pay attention to their checkout page, and will be fleeced for an amount they didn’t ask for and will go straight to Shopee’s pockets. What kind of shady operation is this?

Electronics Protection Insurance SHOULD BE OPTIONAL AND NOT ENABLED BY DEFAULT. Let us fight for consumer protection in this industry. And if you’re in Shopee, before you buy that tech purchase, make sure you uncheck the Electronics Protection before checkout. (Unless you DO want it.)

So far, we’ve noticed the “Electronics Protection” added cost/feature to show up on some electronics gadgets like Mechanical Keyboards and the Roku we ordered. We haven’t seen it yet on things like phones and TWS. Other users have mentioned that phone cases, headsets, and even keyboard keycaps have this also. We haven’t tested everything yet, so we will update the list further. Either way, be aware!
