One of China’s top smartphone and electronics manufacturer, OPPO, is developing their in house smartphone chips for their higher end devices. This is to gain control over components and reduce reliance on seminconductorvendors such as Qualcomm and MediaTek.
The Chinese firm plans to use their own system on a chip (SoC) some time in 2023 or 2024, according to a report from Nikkei Asia.
Now, aside from Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and even Google, OPPO is expected to join the bandwagon designing their in-house mobile processor. Google just recently unveiled their latest flagship lineup, the Pixel 6, that has the Google Tensor chip built by them.
From other sources, OPPO is looking to enter the mobile chip business using TSMC’s cutting edge 3nm node. OPPO, will be the third customer of the Taiwanese clients behind Apple and Intel which also ushered TSMC for the 3nm node.
In-house designed processors are widespread spanning in different electronics manufactureres. Apple has their own Apple A lineup for their smartphones which started years ago. Xiaomi entered the SoC making business since the Surge from 2017 but shifted their focus on their own ISP silicon now presemt on their latest flagships. Samsung has Exynos on some of their devices. And before US sanctions were mandated, Huawei was also in the game with their HiSilicon Kirin chips for their midrange and flagship phones.
Developing in-house silicon can improve supply chain control and possibly enhance supply to neutralize shortages.
