Qualcomm quietly announces the Snapdragon 678. The chip is based on the Snapdragon 675 mobile platform which was announced two years ago. The new silicon brings minor improvements such as a 10% increase in the CPU clock speed.
Instead of 2GHz, the new processor can now run at 2.2GHz. It still bears the same Kryo 460 microarchitecture which features two ARM Cortex-A76 cores and six ARM Cortex-A55 cores. The Adreno 612 makes a return in this platform.
It also has the same Qualcomm X12 4G modem inside which is capable of LTE Category 12, Downlink with speeds of up to 600Mb/s and Uplink of 150Mb/s.
The midrange platform can also support a maximum of 48MP and 2520×1080 in display resolution. It is built also on the same fabrication process as the 675 at 11nm.
The chip is aimed at the lower midrange to midrange segment for 4G devices since the chip lacks support even for low frequency 5G.
It may end up with popular manufacturers from Xiaomi, Realme, OnePlus, Nokia and more.
The exact availability of devices with this chip and their price ranges are still unclear as of now.
