LG’s purveyorship of display technologies (new and old alike) seems to have given us a unique take on Android phone design – the newly launched LG Optimus Vu. With an unmistakably square-ish 4:3 ratio screen, its probably the only phone out there right now that got a little extra adventurous onto the display characteristics side. While most phones would steer closer the wider 16:9 format – including most of LG’s phones – the Vu went decidedly against that trend and opted for a more paper-like, square-like design. It might possibly have the right merits though – as Apple’s popular iPad tablets have always been using a 4:3 ratio screen. (And in fact, the 2nd Gen iPad and iPad Mini share the same resolution as the Optimus Vu.) Priced at PHP 27,990 with a free stylus pen, leather case, and battery backup, it seems to be slightly in favor of going against the likes of the Galaxy Note – which we’ll leave up to you to decide which one you prefer.

So the LG Optimus Vu, as we mentioned, has that unique 4:3 ratio screen. Its actual resolution is 1024×768 – which may sound familiar to guys who may have delved in monitor resolutions back in the day. While that is the most unusual part of the device, the specs are nothing to scoff at. Its got a Quad-Core 1.5Ghz Tegra 3 processor, 8MP Camera with LED Flash, 1.3MP front facing camera, and all running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. One custom feature that’s pretty interesting here is an added button on top of the phone for Quick Memo input. We haven’t seen manufacturers add their own buttons in a while, so this is quite unique – and possibly useful.

While videos, apps, and other content might show up in a letterboxed form (with black bars top/bottom), writing text and reading documents should be easier on a squarer screen – so we’ll regard that one a mix of an advantage and disadvantage, depending on what you use your phones for.

The LG Optimus Vu is priced at SRP PHP 27,990 with a free stylus, leather case, and 3,000 mAh battery backup for extended use. Check them out at your favorite LG retailers and give them a spin!
