Canon Finally Announces The EOS M–18MP Mirrorless ILC With An APS-C Sized Sensor

The Canon EOS M, the imaging giant’s answer to the popular MILC format, (Olympus / Panasonic m4/3, Sony NEX, Nikon 1, etc.) is finally here – and it was pretty much what everyone figured out basing from the rumors. That means no real surprises, but it doesn’t make the camera any less great. In fact, it could be one of the more promising ones to come out into the market today – given that it has a large APS-C sensor, 18MP maximum shooting resolution, and a 1.04 million-dot 3.0” (non articulating) capacitive touchscreen. In fact, most of the features we’ve mentioned have been pretty much pulled from the recently announced Canon EOS 650D – including the multi-point touchscreen, 1080p video, and even the 12,800 (25,600 expanded) ceiling ISO capability. That’s actually a good thing, given that the 650D is a pretty damn good camera. The ILC of course removes the mirror box and viewfinder; made the camera thinner and smaller; and basically made it a small, pocket friendly device with all the power of a DSLR – keeping to the promise of great power in a small package.

 

The new Canon ILC camera will come with a new EF-M mount – which basically is the same APS-C mount they use except with a shorter flange distance. The bonus here though is that regular EOS SLR users can get an adapter called EF-EOS M to take their regular lenses and attach them onto the new mirrorless device. That aside there’s also new kit lenses in the form of the EF-M 18-55mm (f3.5-5.6) IS STM and the EF-M 22mm f2 STM. Both should be available as optional lenses or included in the camera kit.

 

As for features you should expect pretty much everything that came with the Rebel t4i (650D) also comes with the EOS M – such as the 18MP APS-C 1.6x crop sensor; 1080p movie with continuous autofocus; ISO 100-12,800 capabilities; (25,600 extended) 4.3fps burst; and of course all the usual camera features common with Canon cameras. What’s unique to this brand of ILC though is that it has an external mic socket for external audio (with level adjustments), the aforementioned 1.04M dot capacitive touchscreen, EOS-standard hotshoe flash, and of course that well known Canon image quality. You will lose out on a few things though – as the camera’s LCD doesn’t tilt or swivel; no built-in flash; and no accessory ports for a possible viewfinder accessory.

 

 

While the lack of those extra features may make the new EOS a little less compelling, its definitely still a very tempting device to get – especially if you already have a large library of Canon glass – and we all know a lot of people who would love to put some classic 85mm 1.2L on that thing for massive Bokeh (out-of-focus) effects.

 

The Canon EOS M is slated to be priced at about US $799 (PHP 33,500) with the 22mm pancake, €849 (PHP 43,200) for the one with the 18-55mm kit, €1049 (PHP 53,400) for both lenses, and finally €979 (PHP 50,000) for the pancake and the EOS EF adapter. We don’t have information on when it’ll reach the Philippines yet though, so stay tuned for any announcements we might be able to scrounge out for you guys.
