The HTC ChaCha
It looks like the QWERTY Bar HTC ChaCha is taking the company’s favorite mantra, “Quietly Brilliant” to heart. Why? Reports say that the phone has been ‘quietly’ upgraded to a ‘brilliant’ new 800Mhz processor – up from the lowly 600Mhz the initial specification called out. This should bring the Android device up to par with mid-range smartphones and not against the crowded budget end of the spectrum.
We’ve mentioned that the device has been spotted in a SMART ad before, which means the phone is headed for our markets – targeted to a Facebook-conscious crowd. The HTC ChaCha is a portrait QWERTY bar Android phone with a dedicated Facebook button near the bottom. We previously mentioned that it was running at 600Mhz but now it looks like the phone has been upgraded to 800Mhz – which is a world of difference when it comes to Android. Speaking of which, it is on Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Sense UI. Rounding out the features include the 2.6” 480×320 touchscreen, 5MP camera + LED Flash, front-facing VGA, WiFi b/g/n, and the aforementioned Facebook button.
After having been upgraded to its new processor, our interest with this device have definitely increased. We’d definitely like to know how much Smart and/or HTC is planning to sell this for – as there is a large need for mid-range 800Mhz Android’s out there. Our original ideas gave it a 600Mhz price point, so if they “quietly” upgraded the device then the price might not have changed to a mid-range level. Will it compete price-wise with budget phones but have a faster processor? That’s what we’d like to find out!
