The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 has been the king in the Android space in terms of raw power and the wide availability with it being used in a variety of devices. Now, a Lite version of it has been rumored to be brewing on the horizon.
Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station has detailed an unknown midrange chipset. He said that it will be built on a 7nm manufacturing process. This is identical to the Snapdragon 865 built on TSMC’s 7nm node. Alongside with that is the similar architecture to the Snapdragon 875.
Stated there is a combo of two clusters of 4 CPU core designs from ARM which are Cortex-A77 and Cortex-A55 respectively. He said that the clock speeds of the cores are currently unknown.
Given that the nature of it is being built, a 7nm chip with this year’s ARM CPU design makes us think that this is the rumored Snapdragon 860 platform.
It is speculated before that the 860 will be a toned down version of the flagship Snapdragon 865. It could be that the clock speeds of the alleged chip will be lower to tone down performance. It is fascinating that the San Diego firm might be working on such a chip for midrange devices. If true then before it is only the Snapdragon 700 series that reign on their midrange lineup and even before that, only the 600 series.
