The Snapdragon 855 had an incremental upgrade last year with the Snapdragon 855 Plus released at the second half of last year. This year, Qualcomm is geared with the Snapdragon 865 with majority of flagship devices at the first half of 2020. Thoughts surface as rumors started with the alleged Snapdragon 865 Plus was spotted.
It started when Max Weinbach and Ice Universe had an encounter with a Geekbench result with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 20. The listing had a Snapdragon 865, but with a clock frequency of 3.09GHz. This is noticeably higher than the standard frequency in which it runs at 2.84GHz.
Since then, rumors and other devices surfaces with different tipsters claiming that they are equipped with the alleged chip.
Though the rumor mill stopped when an exec from Meizu stated that “there will be no 865 Plus”. This however has been debunked as translation didn’t kick in well and that they meant that the won’t be a Meizu device having the chip.
Samsung,OnePlus, Sony, ASUS and Xiaomi has been reported using the chip within their devices. Days ago, Twitter leaker Ice Universe has stated that the Snapdragon 865 Plus will be equipped with numerous Samsung flagship devices.
Also, the rumored ASUS ROG Phone III is reported to launch this July 22.
By then, we will confirm the existence of the Snapdragon 865 Plus.
Just yesterday, Qualcomm has officially announced the Snapdragon 865 Plus. It offers performance and connectivity upgrades over the 865.
The Plus variant improves upon the 865 with 10% more CPU and GPU performance. The Prime core now runs at 3.1GHz. This is the first mobile chip that breaches the 3GHz frequency barrier. Also, the Adreno 650 GPU gets a 10% boost from the standard version.
The new chip also receives upgraded treatment with connectivity. Bluetooth 5.2 is now native to the 865 Plus. Also, Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6900 enables the chip to have WiFi 6E support which improves upon WiFi 6 capabilities. The chip can now receive for up to 3.6Gb a second of speed.
The mobile platform will be available first on the ASUS ROG Phone III and the upcoming Lenovo Legion Gaming Smartphone. The former will launch at July 22 in some regions such as India.
Only time will tell if manufacturers will also adopt this new chipset to their devices.
