Samsung has just unveiled the newest Note smartphones and aside from getting most of what we expected given the large amount of leaks and rumors out there, there were some surprises here and there that made us quite excited about the Galaxy Note 10 and the Note 10 Plus.
We’ve outlined the most notable features in our hands-on video embedded above, so make sure to check out that video for a quick rundown on what we think of the new device. Or of course, you can scroll down and read up on more of the specs and features below!
First of all, most of what impressed us with the new Note 10 and Note 10 Plus is some newer software features. Samsung Dex now packs a mode where it can connect to your current PC – be it Mac or Windows, and it can run Dex Mode on a window on it. You can even drag-and-drop files between your PC/Mac to your Note 10 – even onto Powerpoint presentations and the like. This is an amazing new feature that makes Dex a lot more practical for consumers like me who want to use my phone on my PC and/or laptop and easily transfer files. Imagine using your PC to open Instagram and typing your post on a keyboard? Or dragging a photo from your phone to Adobe Photoshop for more powerful editing and then dragging it back to Instagram? That’s crazy amounts of time savings right there. Anyway, we digress.
Other features include a gesture-sensitive S-Pen that lets you have scripted actions while holding the pen wirelessly. Allowing you to, say, zoom in with a clockwise motion on the pen while far away from the phone.
There are new ways to create content as well with the pen. You can record 15-second snippet videos while writing something on a photo or video, and you can also finally capture your homescreen with front camera embedded to record screencasts. This feature was previously only available in the Game Mode, which limits its usefulness.
Writing with the pen is also now more flexible, since the phone now has optical character recognition or handwriting recognition. So any notes you write with the S-Pen can be instantly converted to actual text. An easy tool to transcode your handwriting for, say adding it to a word document.
On the camera features front, you get Live Focus video which gives you multiple ways to manipulate the background while recording video, and you now have Audio Zoom that lets you hear more of the subject you’re shooting if they’re far away. Finally, you also get upgraded video editing features on the built-in Samsung app.
Now let’s talk about the specs – which we have to admit are a bit interesting this time. The Note 10 packs a 6.3″ Dynamic AMOLED but seems to have been downgraded to a FHD+ resolution and weirdly enough this variant has no MicroSD slot. It’s powered by a 3,500 mAh Battery that has 25w Fast Charging with 12w Fast Wireless Charging.
The Note 10 Plus has 4 rear cameras which include a new Time-Of-Flight sensor, but mostly identical otherwise. You get a bigger 6.8″ WQHD+ display, 4,300 mAh Battery with even faster 45w Charging & 25w Wireless Charging.
Curiously, both phones don’t feature a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the punch hole on the display that holds the 10MP front camera is now in the middle, which aesthetically is less pleasing and reminds us a lot of a dewdrop notch from midrangers. Samsung says its a better placement for selfies, but with the Note 10 not having a MicroSD slot, no headphone jack, and a middle screen notch/punch hole. It just seems like they’re losing their competitive identity a little bit.
Either way, its up to you to judge. Thankfully, my personal S10+ still has all those. Anyway, specs of the phones are below, and below that are the pre-order freebies and details.
