In an effort to improve the data management at the largest TV content importer in the Philippines, Solar Entertainment Corporation (2nd Avenue, Basketball TV, ETC, Shop TV, Jack TV, Solar All Access, Solar Sports, Talk TV, NBA Premium TV, Radio Philippines Network, and The Game Channel) have signed with IBM to procure their subscription services to help manage their database of programs and data. With IBM at the helm of their database management and storage, Solar TV can concentrate on their core businesses – while taking advantage of the Big Blue’s expertise in their storage and archiving infrastructures.

Before the agreement, Solar was using a tape-based system to store and manage their programs which were brought in from outside of the Philippines through a much more involved process. Today, with the power of IBM’s services and networks, they are able to download said original programs preserved in higher quality and store them in IBM’s servers – complete with dedicated engineers to make sure the data is secure with redundant backup systems. The agreement involves at least 450 Terabytes of data – about 1 Terabyte a day – and will probably be increased at a later date as Solar TV grows and expands with more programs and channels.

The agreement was signed on October 5, 2011. For more information about IBM’s services or Solar TV, check out their websites here and here, respectively.
