The Cherry Mobile Magnum 2X
The beauty of Android has always been because it can provide twice the performance for half the price of their sad, slow moving, non-Android contemporaries. Nothing encompasses that more than the recent dual-core developments and pricing competitiveness of the Google OS phones as of late. The newest weapon looks like its coming from our very own local brand Cherry Mobile, which will soon offer a dual-core Android smartphone solution for only PHP 15,899 called the Magnum 2X. With most dual-core droids retailing for about PHP 23k or above, the 2X will no doubt become another popular choice among budget-conscious consumers in the midrange price point.
With competing single-core non-droids hovering around the PHP 32k mark, the Magnum 2X is seen effectively halving that pricetag and simultaneously doubling its processing cores. The phone is running on a 1Ghz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 3.8” 800×480 screen, 8GB internal storage, 5MP rear camera, VGA front, and the usual Android connectivity options. Its currently running on Android 2.2 Froyo though, but their page does say it can be upgraded to Gingerbread. So far, Cherry Mobile has been doing good with those software updates though so Gingerbread for this device sounds promising. And from what we can tell, the 2X looks like an OEM K-Touch W700 device, which is a decent looking device with some aluminum parts for protection. This is definitely quite an upgrade over what we can call its predecessor the Cherry Mobile Magnum HD.
The Cherry Mobile Facebook page lists this as available now, so hopefully we should be seeing these in stores. We haven’t checked our local retailers yet though, so if you’re going to pick one up, call them first. Then you can laugh at those guys with single core phones that paid for twice the price!
